Sodium-ion Battery / Na-ion Battery
The sodium-ion battery (NIB or SIB) is a type of rechargeable battery that uses sodium ions (Na+) as its charge carriers. Its working principle and cell construction in some case are similar to those of lithium-ion battery (LIB) types, but replace lithium with sodium. The largest advantage of sodium-ion batteries is the natural abundance of sodium, in contrast to the uneven geographic distribution, high environmental impact and high cost of many of the materials required for lithium-ion batteries such as lithium, cobalt, copper and nickel.
Na-ion batteries can use a number of different materials as electrodes. The most common combination is that of sodium transition metal oxides (cathode) and hard carbon (anode). Na-ion batteries typically use non-aqueous carbonate ester polar aprotic solvents (including ethylene carbonate, dimethyl carbonate, diethyl carbonate, and propylene carbonate) as an electrolyte, which extends the voltage range. The most widely used non-aqueous electrolyte uses sodium hexafluorophosphate as the salt dissolved in a mixture of these solvents. Additionally, electrolyte additives can improve performance metrics.
Sodium-ion batteries have several advantages over competing battery technologies. Compared to lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries have somewhat lower cost, slightly lower energy density, better safety characteristics, and similar power delivery characteristics.
